Kurt and Pam

 Dear Birth Family,

No words can express how blessed we feel that you would consider us to adopt your child. We can’t imagine how difficult this time is for you. We admire and respect your strength and courage to choose life for your child and make an adoption plan. Know that we have been praying for you and your family for a long time. We hope that you find peace with your decision as we can’t imagine the physical and emotional challenges that you are facing in this process.

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and explain why we would like to be considered in your adoption plan. We have been married for over 7 years now. Prior to marriage, we knew that we wanted a family and discussed the possibility of adoption. Once we decided to pursue having a family, we realized that we were not called to have a child from our bodies. Because we felt there was a physical reason that we weren’t conceiving, we saw several doctors to find out the problem. Meanwhile, we started our first adoption process before we knew what the problem was, as we knew in our hearts we were being lead on a different path to parenthood. While we were in the process of adopting Travis from Guatemala we found out that our chances of conceiving a child were limited.

After we brought Travis home, we knew almost immediately that we wanted a second child. When Travis came home Kurt had recently graduated with a Master’s in Social Work and had just begun a new job so we decided to wait a little while before we adopted again so that he could be adjusted to fatherhood and a new career and so that Pam could adjust to motherhood and being a working mom. Pam works part time as a middle school special education teacher. She is home with Travis during the summer.

It was a challenging time for us when we were trying to start a family. We had always dreamed of having children. Because we married in our 30’s, we were hopeful that our family life would begin quickly. We endured many challenges during the 5 year path it took us to become parents. Those challenges strengthened our bond as a couple and have made us cherish our family. That journey showed us, our family, and friends how we needed to go through those times to be lead to our beautiful son. We know at this time, we are also being led to the right child for us through a domestic adoption. We have a stable marriage, financial security, a great home with a big yard and family friendly neighborhood in which to raise a family. We are blessed with supportive and loving family and friends.

We take our family life very seriously. Travis and future children are always our first thoughts. We work very hard at giving Travis love, emotional and physical security, as well as structure in his life. We have always talked to him about how he was a little baby in Guatemala and about the trips over to see him before we brought him home. It is important to us that Travis knows his story and where he is from. We always emphasize the love that he was given from his beginning. Of course, since he is only 3, we speak to him age appropriately about his adoption. We are working very hard to make sure Travis knows that he was brought to us by an act of love and that families form in many ways. It is our belief that each of us has a story about how we came into this world and how we all become families. No one way is better than the other. We intend to make sure a second child have the same love and security as Travis and know his/her own story also.

Parenting has been a wonderful gift to us that has exceeded our every expectation. We thoroughly enjoy seeing the world through the eyes of our son. Saturday morning pancake breakfasts as a family, family walks, and nightly stories are all times we treasure. We would welcome pictures, letters, and possible visits throughout your child’s life.
