Young Moms Waiting for a Mentor
Lexi is a 24-year-old woman with two daughters, ages 6 and 4, and a newborn son. She lives near Woodland Mall. Lexi is overwhelmed by the stress of being a single parent and would like to talk with a volunteer about the challenges in her life. Lexi and her daughters would enjoy child friendly activities such as trips to the zoo, Children’s Museum, library or mall. They would also enjoy playing games or doing puzzles. Lexi would like support and encouragement as she works toward her goals regarding education and employment. She would also appreciate advice about parenting. Lexi is a very special young woman.

Kani is a 20-year-old woman with a newborn daughter. Kani describes herself as shy, quiet, dependable and sensitive, but she opens up quickly when someone reaches out to her. She smiles all the time and tries to make other people smile. Kani lives with the father of her baby and his family, but she does not have any friends. She needs a volunteer who will become a true friend. Kani is interested in taking walks, bowling, baking and cooking. She also needs to learn about parenting, child development and healthy relationships with men. Kani needs a volunteer who will appreciate her quiet, calm nature but also be able to draw Kani out of her shell.

Lata is a 21-year-old mother with a 2-year-old daughter living in SE Grand Rapids. She is expecting her second child in June. Lata is personable, cheerful, and respectful. She loves to talk! Lata smokes, and her home is very cluttered and quite dirty. Lata wants a volunteer who can point her in the right direction because she wants to make positive changes in her life. Lata is very eager to get her GED and find a job, but she will need the support of a volunteer to make this happen. Lata also wants to learn about parenting and child development.

Jackie is a 24-year-old mother of two boys living in NE Grand Rapids. Her 4-year-old son is very bright and is learning his colors and numbers. Her 2-year-old son is active and enjoys playing with his toy cars. Jackie is a high school graduate and works five days week. She is sometimes overwhelmed by the stress of being a single mom and would like someone to talk to. Jackie would like to cook, bake, run errands or go to the zoo or a park. Jackie would like a volunteer who can share her wisdom and life experience.

Pari is a 26-year-old refugee who recently immigrated to the United States from Bhutan in South East Asia. She, her husband and their year-old son live near 44th Street and Breton. Pari is friendly, responsible and eager to make a new friend of any age. She would like to improve her English and learn about all there is to do in the West Michigan area. Pari also needs help with transportation and accessing community resources. Pari has several goals: continue her education, find a part-time job, work on a budget, and create a wonderful life for her son in the United States. Pari would be an excellent match for someone who would like to involve her entire family in the volunteer experience. It would be a special blessing for Pari and her husband to spend time with an American family.
